We’ve blogged about the SE W880i before, back when it was just an initial rumor and when new pictures were set loose on the web. Well guess what! It just got approved by the FCC! When handsets are approved, useful documentation (like user manuals and etc) usually appear on the FCC site, but there isn’t much of anything there this time, which begs the question: What makes the W880i so special? We know that basic specs include a 1.8″ QVGA display, 2 megapixel camera, Memory Stick Micro support and Java MIDP 2.0 capability, but why the FCC decided not to post anything additional is beyond us. The super-slim walkman phone will be available soon so hopefully we’ll be able to answer all our questions then. When exactly it will be available and for how much is still up in the air. Stay tuned for updates.

Another addition to the Japanese mobile phone market is the Hitachi W51H which, according to SlashPhone, boasts of Hitachi’s proprietary LCD technology called IPS instead of general TFT. The difference between them is that with the IPS “a horizontal electric field causes liquid crystal molecules to rotate in a plane parallel to the TFT substrate,” That certainly means nothing but a clearer and better screen resolution, improved color reproduction, wider viewing angle and faster gray to gray response time.

Tired of getting your your handsets scratched from accidental bumps or falls? Not willing to get a bulky protective casing for it? Well, in the near future, you might not need to. Nokia of Finland are experimenting on a way to give their phone casings a little more protection by coating their phones with a diamond-like substance created with graphite plasma. An electric current is fed through coal graphite, which creates plasma. This plasma is then directed towards the casing to be, well, encased via high-voltage elctrodes. The plasma penetrates the plastic surface and bonds with it to form a diamond-like coating just shy of 100 nanometers thick. The coating is both durable and anti-static, repelling dust and dirt. What’s more, if and when the owner decides to throw the phone away, the thin coating is biodegradable. Apple have also been working on a technique to further protect their phones by extruding a Zirconia ceramic into the phone’s case shape instead of coating a plastic case. According to available documentation from Apple, the coating does not affect reception.
