Fresh from Yankodesign, this particular concept phone is the brainchild of Sunman Kwon. Worn around the wrist, touching a button on the knuckle turns the device on, projecting a 3×4 keypad unto your fingers, enabling the user to treat each joint as a button. Available images suggest that it will come with a circular display, possibly with video telephony capability, and hypothesized with either integrated handsfree or bluetooth capability. Whether this particular concept will see mass production is anyone’s guess. If ever it does, it will be a long time from now. The adage will have to be modified to “Reach out and touch someone, by touching yourself.”

Three words come to mind when you first encounter the Pantech U170: Simple, Elegant, Elite. This clamshell phone comes in a fashionable metal casing, and features a 2.2-inch QVGA 260k color LCD display, 128 polyphonic ring tones and a multi-tasking MP3 player. It began with Sprint Nextel, followed by Cingular (now AT&T) and now Verizon Wireless follows suite. Verizon will now charge its subscribers $.15, up from $.10, for each SMS, whether it’s incoming or outgoing. This price increase will begin on the 1st of March, and will affect all customers except those who are subscribed to a messaging plan. Available info via FAQ isn’t clear as to whether Verizon will allow customers who don’t have a text messaging plan to terminate their contracts without paying the corresponding fee, though it has been reported that Customer Service Reps have been offering to disable the text messaging feature for free as it is the only item that has been affected by the price change.

Come Monday, January 15, when the merger that made Cingular, AT&T and Bellsouth into share one umbrella becomes executory as it has been approved by the Federal regulators, the re-rebranding of Cingular will start taking place, and will soon be known as AT&T, not AT&T Wireless as this was the name that Cingular rebranded as the result of another merger a couple of years back. National ads will be launched that will focus on customer recall that “Cingular is now the new AT&T”, as well as the “Wireless from AT&T” catchphrase. As MobileTracker writes, “Initially advertisements will feature a transitional graphic that includes both logos much like what happened with the AT&T Wireless transition.” And according to PhoneScoop, “They will feature scenes where it looks like the Cingular “bars” are being illustrated and zoom out to show that it was actually the AT&T globe.” It is noteworthy that Cingular spent around 5 billion rebranding what used to be AT&T Wireless, according to Mobiletracker, and that almost a billion of that was spent last year.

As we have mentioned in our previous Apple iPhone post, the name iPhone has been owned by Cisco since the mid-’90s, has even launched said phone recently. After the Applie iPhone announcement at MacWorld yesterday, Cisco issued and official statement, and we quote, “Given Apple’s numerous requests for permission to use Cisco’s iPhone trademark over the past several years and our extensive discussions with them recently, it is our belief that with their announcement today, Apple intends to agree to the final document and public statement that were distributed to them last night and that addressed a few remaining items. We expect to receive a signed agreement today.” However,it seems that the negotiations between Apple and Cisco has taken a nosedive, as Cisco has changed its tune as they have sued Apple for trademark infringement. Cisco has filed in a federal court for a petition for an injunction, to prevent Apple from committing infringement. Cisco’s senior vice president and general counsel, Mark Chandler has this to say, “”Cisco entered into negotiations with Apple in good faith after Apple repeatedly asked permission to use Cisco’s iPhone name..There is no doubt that Apple’s new phone is very exciting, but they should not be using our trademark without our permission.”
